The BIM model, an acronym for Bulding Information Modeling, was born out of a desire to move toward collaboration among designers, software interoperability, process integration, and sustainability. It is a design method that enables the integration of useful information at every stage of design. BIM was made mandatory for public contracting stations by DM 560/2017, starting with projects with work amounts of €100 million or more as early as January 2019. These amounts will be reduced annually, leading to the obligation to call for tenders in BIM for the construction or redevelopment of public works for any type of work as of 2025.
UNI Standard 11337-7: 2018 defines the requirements for the activities of the following certifiable professionals:
-
CDE Manager: manages the environment in which the exchange of information between the different actors participating in a project (CDE) takes place. Controls the interoperable process of information, correctness and timeliness of the operational flow. Relates model contents to other data in the platform and applies data protection techniques
-
BIM Manager: manages and periodically updates organization guidelines on information management for all disciplines, coordinating the activities of other operational figures. Ensures the coordination of the project, managing the expected roles and phases, and identifies interferences by reassigning within the project team their correction. Develops the information specifications for the client and the BIM Execution Plan (Information Management Plan) for internal company use. Verifies operational implementation and adherence to standards established with BIM coordinators and takes care of information content changes
-
BIM Coordinator: coordinates the BIM Specialists involved in the project to ensure the application of standards and processes through the use of software necessary for the coordination of BIM drafting, control, and project management activities. Also deals with information content sharing and aggregation issues. Reports to the BIM Manager on every detail of project development by facilitating the information process
-
BIM Specialist: is responsible for using the software to implement a project in BIM and developing the 3D model. Processes and, if necessary, modifies in-process graphic models and related objects and their libraries, performs data extraction. Also performs technical analysis using company documentation to produce drawings and models (standards and procedures)
Certification is awarded after passing an examination consisting of a written test, a practical test and an oral test. The duration of the certification is five years and will be validated through an annual evaluation of the documentation proving the maintenance of competencies carried out by ACS Italia and an oral examination scheduled at the expiration of the certification. With certification, the professional is able to provide greater assurance to his or her clients, gain credibility and access the registers of certified professionals.
